Within the clinical activity of the General and Minimally Invasive Surgery Complex Operational Unit of the San Camillo hospital in Trento, coloproctology constitutes an important part.
The Operational Unit deals with benign and oncological pathologies of the colorectal-anus.
For the oncological part, endoscopic treatments are available (endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) or endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)) and interventions with microsurgical techniques (TransAnal Minimally Invasive Surgery (T.A.M.I.S.)) intended for patients suffering from lesions in the early stage. In cases of advanced tumors with an indication for resective surgery, minimally invasive surgery is the approach of first choice because it improves the post-operative outcome in terms of pain, wound infections, wall complications and speed of patient recovery.
Even for benign pathologies for which an abdominal surgical approach is envisaged (e.g. diverticulitis), minimally invasive surgery is the first choice.
The transabdominal approach to pelvic floor pathology (rectal prolapse, rectocele and descended perineum) is also minimally invasive. For years now we have refined the surgical technique of laparoscopic ventral rectopexy with the use of biological mesh, standardizing surgical times, in order to obtain rapid and functional surgery.
For proctological pathologies (mucohemorrhoidal prolapse, anal fissures and fistulas, condylomatosis, sinus pilonidalis) an individualized therapy is offered to the patient thanks also to the aid, where indicated, of high-volume staplers for prolassectomy, of radiofrequency and ultrasound devices, of doppler and laser technologies.
Thanks to a multidisciplinary approach that involves dedicated radiologists, endoscopists, gynecologists, urologists, gastroenterologists and physiotherapists, we are able to provide the patient with 360-degree management ranging from diagnosis to post-operative rehabilitation.
