The UCP of Padua was born at the Complex Operational Unit of General Surgery of the Sant'Antonio Hospital (OSA Surgery-Padua University Hospital Company). The complex structure deals with the diagnosis and elective and emergency treatment of benign and malignant surgical pathologies of the upper and lower digestive system (gastric neoplasms, GIST, NET, peritoneal carcinomatosis with hyperthermic perfusion techniques), abdominal wall surgery (hernias and incisional hernias) with open and laparoscopic techniques, of gallbladder and biliary tract pathologies and phlebological pathologies. In particular, the UCP of Padua is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of organic and functional pathologies of the colon, rectum, anus and pelvic floor. It makes use of collaboration with other operational units. Diagnostic investigations (high-definition anorectal manometry, two-dimensional and three-dimensional transanal ultrasound) and surgical interventions in the coloproctological field are performed using the most modern and advanced technologies, such as:
- Colorectal neoplasms with minimally invasive approach
• Peritoneal cytoreductive surgery in combination with Intraperitoneal Chemo-hyperthermia (HIPEC)
• Rectal prolapse and rectocele (VLS ventral rectopexy, Altemeier, Delorme, transvaginal posterior plastic)
• ODS (obstructed defecation syndrome)
• Fecal incontinence or stubborn constipation (sphincteroplasty, sacral neuromodulation
• Haemorrhoidal pathology (haemorrhoidectomies, Help treatment)
• Anal fistulas (fistulectomy, LIFT, FLAP, Filac)
• Pilonidal fistulas (Silac)
• Anal fissure
• Anal condylomatosis
Patients can come to the Unit via the Emergency Department, through outpatient access or by transfer from other Operating Units.
All cases are discussed collegially before each therapeutic phase, when indicated in a multidisciplinary context, together with specialists in Oncology, Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Radiotherapy and Gastroenterology.
In particular, the UOC, within the Padua University Hospital, is a Level III Regional Reference Center (highly specialized center) for fecal and urinary incontinence.
The Third Level Centre, in addition to guaranteeing the treatment of urinary, fecal incontinence and stomas typical of the Level II Centre, is characterized by its high specialization and the ability to carry out highly complex diagnostic tests and surgical interventions.
A clinic and part of the team (Proctology Team) are dedicated to advanced instrumental diagnostics for proctological and pelvic floor pathologies (endoanal ultrasound and anorectal manometry). Thanks to interspecialist interactions (Urology, Gynaecology, Gastroenterology, Physiatry, Dietetics and Psychology) the scope of treatment of incontinence extends and is completed also to urinary incontinence.
